Cost and Funding

Supporting one or more Collaboratory teams is an investment in school-wide literacy reform. The resources Brown provides and the expertise we develop within participating team members can be shared throughout the school during and after the Collaboratory year.

Cost

The cost for one 5-person team to participate in a year-long Collaboratory is $18,000. This breaks down to $3,600 per person for 120 hours of professional development. The cost covers:

• Five-day face-to-face literacy institute, including breakfast and lunch*
• Full school year of online coaching and facilitation
• Unlimited access during and after Collaboratory participation to online library of literacy-rich lessons in science, math, social studies, and English/language arts from fellow Collaboratory participants
• Certificate from The Education Alliance at Brown University for completing 120 hours of professional development
• Regularly scheduled telephone or online conference calls with team leaders
• One day of facilitated sustainability planning (face-to-face or online)
• All learning materials
• A $1,000 stipend for each team member who successfully completes the program

For an additional cost, each teacher completing the program can earn six graduate credits from either Plymouth State University in New Hampshire ($355) or Framingham State College in Massachusetts ($390).

* Travel, lodging, and dinner costs during the literacy institute are the responsibility of the participants and their supporting organizations. Information about lodging options in Providence, RI will be provided.

For districts or regions with five or more teaching teams, orientation institutes can be held at a local site. Local district(s) will be responsible for breakfast, lunch, and a suitable meeting space.

Funding

Past Collaboratory teams have funded their participation with Smaller Learning Communities grants, Title I or II funds, district professional development funds, other local, state, or federal grant monies, or funds from a local foundation.

New Hampshire teams are eligible for grants of up to $10,000 from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation's Walker Fund. Applications for the Walker Fund are due by May 1 for awards made in early June and by November 1 for awards made in early December. Because this professional development experience requires online postings from all participants, it automatically documents the work of your school or district to improve literacy. This evidence may be useful in completing progress reports for grant awards.

Rhode Island Schools are encouraged to use Article 31 funds to support their participation.
