The Role of Facilitation in Online Professional Development: Engendering Co-construction of Knowledge

This research paper is part of a series investigating how online technologies can support the professional learning of K-12 educators. The authors conducted a study that explored the facilitation strategies used to foster collaboration and mathematical inquiry among participants in an online seminar. The Investigations Online seminar helps elementary school mathematics teachers to implement the Investigations in Data, Number, and Space curriculum. This paper describes the results of the study and the design features of this model for online professional learning. This and the other studies in the series point to key features and findings useful to state and district agencies and designers of online professional development.
