Mr. John Ficalora, Principal, Principal
Newtown High School, located in Elmhurst, Queens, has 4309 students, one-fifth of whom arrived from another country within the last three years. Newtown's students come from 110 countries and speak 41 different languages. Newtown's academic programs include educational options in Art, Business and Pre-Engineering, coop. ed. and internships, and Saturday Academy. Extracurricular activities include an extensive athletic program, Mock Trial, Moot Court, FED Challenge Lincoln-Douglas Debate, theater and multicultural festivals.
Newtown offers a wide range of services for its English language learners (ELLs). These include before-school tutoring in ESL, ESL honors classes and a special Tech Prep program for ELLs. ELLs are also eligible to participate in Newtown's Business Institute and Pre-Engineering program. Content area classes are available in Chinese, Spanish, and Korean, and 5 levels of Chinese language, 4 levels of Korean, and 5 levels of Spanish language classes are offered.
Despite the additional burden of learning a new language that many of these young people face, Newtown High School students do well. For example, according to the 1998-98 annual school report, student performance highlights include above average performance on Regents examinations and in attendance. Newtown's ELL students also out-performed their peers on the Regents Competency in Writing, Sequential Math 1, and Spanish Reading exams.
