P.S. 11 is a K-6 school with 1,300 students located in Woodside, Queens. Its highly diverse student population boasts 50 different home languages; the most common are Spanish, Bengali, Chinese and Korean. P.S. 11's mission statement affirms that P.S. 11 provides all of its youngsters with a world class education. In a culturally diverse, child-centered school, it promotes a safe, nurturing, and exciting learning environment. The school's commitment to excellence is accomplished through the collaborative efforts of involved parents, a supportive community, and a dedicated and supportive staff.

P.S. 11 has a model Dual Language Acquisition Program in English and Spanish for youngsters in Kindergarten through Grade 6. P.S. 11 was also the first school in New York city to develop a program in Values Education. This program led to the development of the LIVE curriculum, which is now used throughout the New York City school system. In addition to its Dual Language Acquisition program, PS 11 offers its 354 English Language Learners self-contained and pull-out ESL services as well as Chinese and Korean bilingual instruction. Other special academic programs include: Spanish and Italian foreign language classes, Adopt-a-Country Program and Project Arts.

Professional development is provided for all the staff of P.S. 11 throughout the year in reading, writing, mathematics, science and technology, and the use of ESL methodologies in the classroom in order to help students meet the performance standards. Programs for parents include ESL and Spanish as a Second Language classes, computer workshops and a parent leadership/involvement project.

P.S. 11 is very proud of the achievement of its students. In 1999 they were among the top 15% of city schools in their New York City reading test scores. They outperformed their peers in city and state math exams as well. ELLs at P.S. 11 make exceptional progress in English, Spanish and math. 95% of 4th grade ELLs met/exceeded State minimum standards in English in 1999. On New York City exams, 72% of ELLs in grades 3 through 6 were at or above grade level in Spanish reading, and the percent of ELLs in those grades scoring at or above grade level in math was double that of the city-wide average.

P.S. 11 promotes an ongoing understanding and interaction among students, staff, and parents in terms of academic and cultural awareness. In P.S. 11 there is a collaborative team spirit among administration, staff, and parents encouraging and supporting the students of the school.
