Leadership Academy in Cultural Competency to launch this fall

The Education Alliance at Brown University has been awarded a one-year $70,000 grant from The Rhode Island Foundation to support the development of "The Education Leadership Academy in Cultural Competency." This year long professional development program will engage 10 current and prospective education leaders from Providence, Pawtucket, and Central Falls to apply a cultural competency framework to the policy and practices that affect the teaching and learning environments that exist in their schools.

The Academy will provide the opportunity for educational leaders to engage in deep analysis of cultural competencies and proficiencies as they relate to language, culture, race, ethnicity, and equity. Given the increased diversity within Rhode Island’s urban communities, the Academy is designed to advance the cultural proficiency of Rhode Island educational leaders. Recruitment of leaders from the urban communities will begin in late fall/early winter 2008.
