A kickoff training session for Project BRITE (Brown's Response to Improving Teacher Education) was held on November 26, 2007 at The Education Alliance. Project BRITE provides support and consultation to 36 higher education faculty involved in the preparation of secondary school teachers who will work in schools with high concentrations of English language learners (ELLs).
This training session included university coordinators from the four participating universities (University of New Hampshire, Syracuse University, Westfield State College, University of Vermont) as well as the Alliance Director Adeline Becker and Senior Coordinator Bob Parker. The training focused on the socio-cultural context of diverse student populations as well as practices and strategies for professional development.
The first cohort of twelve distinguished faculty from the four universities has been selected and will begin fully participating in the project in January. Their initial involvement will include a full-day overview of standards and methodologies for content area ELL teachers.
