The Collaboratory, a long-term, job-embedded professional development program for interdisciplinary teams of middle and high school teachers, is now identifying districts to join its 2009–2010 cohort. The program blends online and face-to-face activities to help teachers improve their students' performance in science, math, social studies, and English/language arts by developing their literacy skills. The main content for the program is The Knowledge Loom's spotlight Adolescent Literacy in the Content Areas. Support is provided by content-area literacy coaches and a seasoned school literacy coordinator.
Preliminary findings from an evaluation funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York indicate significant increases in participants' knowledge and use of research-based literacy strategies and significant improvement in their students' reading skills.
Districts are invited to participate for one to three years, with district-wide capacity-building a focus of the multi-year program. Please visit the Adolescent Literacy Collaboratory's website for more information about the program, and contact loom
