NEEAC co-sponsors the 15th New England Conference on Multicultural Education on October 14, 2010

The 15th Annual New England Conference on Multicultural Education (NECME) was a tremendous success according to the nearly 450 educators from around the region who attended on October 14, 2010. The Education Alliance at Brown University hosted the event this year, held at the Hartford Marriott in Farmington, Connecticut. NECME was co-sponsored by the New England Equity Assistance Center, the Connecticut State Department of Education, Goodwin College and five departments/schools of education (Central Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut, Bates College, Southern Connecticut State University, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst).

Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, a leader in the field of multicultural education and our keynote speaker, passionately and persuasively broadened our perspective on the so-called "Achievement Gap" by defining the numerous other "gaps" that ultimately impact student achievement in this country. Almost 60 workshop leaders, both nationally known and local presenters from New England, offered 32 workshops on a wide range of topics impacting student achievement: meeting the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners, improving school climate and reducing bullying/harassment, while discussing controversial topics like racism, supporting LGBT students and families, and so many more!
