Accepting Applications for 2006–2007 Adolescent Literacy Collaboratory Middle and high school cross-content teams (math, science, social studies, English/LA teachers) receive expert facilitation and coaching on how to integrate research-based literacy strategies into their content lessons to support student achievement. This year-long, job-embedded professional development opportunity begins July 31st in Providence, Rhode Island. Build local expertise by having a 5-member team from your school participate or consider a full cohort of 25–30 teachers. (Alternate location and dates can be arranged for multiple groups in a district.)
New England Equity Assistance Center (NEEAC) website redesigned The redesign was timed in conjunction with the latest award cycle. The website includes an online service request form for technical assistance and professional development services. Revised resources and news sections are updated regularly with information on NEEAC offerings and other equity-related opportunities. Through the site, users can also sign up to receive monthly email announcements detailing NEEAC activities.
The 18th Annual Superintendents' Leadership Institute held The 18th Annual Superintendents' Leadership Institute was held on May 3–5, 2006 in Newport, Rhode Island. The keynoters included: Ernest Fleishman, Sr. Vice President, Scholastic, Inc., "Turning Around Low Performing Schools: We Know What Works;" Raymond J. McNulty, Executive Director, Successful Practices Network, "Let's Not Define Accountability Too Narrowly;" and Angus S. King, Jr., former Governor of Maine, "The World is Flat."
Alliance's executive director expresses her appreciation In an open letter, the Alliance's executive director expressed her appreciation after the completion of ten years of service to the region as the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory (REL). She acknowledged the partnerships with state departments of education, schools, districts, colleges of education, and other research and technical assistance organizations that are at the core of all Alliance services. The Alliance continues its work in the region and nation through its many other quality programs.
Awards for the U.S. Department of Education's Striving Readers Program announced The first of eight national awards for the U.S. Department of Education's Striving Readers Program was recently announced. Springfield Public Schools and Chicopee Public Schools in Massachusetts have partnered with The Education Alliance as their external evaluator for this $16.6 million grant targeted to improve literacy skills of struggling adolescent readers. The districts cited Alliance research and evaluation specialist staff as key to organizing meetings, group input, and critical inquiry for this successful effort. Project activities commence in fall 2006 and continue over a five-year period.
