Project Summary

Adolescent Literacy Project

In collaboration with the Center for Inquiry on Secondary Education (CISE) in Maine and the Center for Resource Management (CRM), The Education Alliance produced research-based resources that provide guidelines for planning, implementing, and sustaining adolescent literacy initiatives at the secondary level, and provided professional development that applied effective secondary literacy classroom practices in the subject areas.

The emphasis of this project was to disseminate useful research-based materials in Maine and analyze their application for wider dissemination. Staff also explored ways to align this work with a project of the Education Department at Brown University that focused on the performing arts to engage secondary level students in literacy. That Brown University project took place in several urban high schools in Rhode Island, primarily in Central Falls and Providence. These pilot sites were used to test the process in urban school settings and provide expanded learnings for other projects in this program area.
