Johns Hopkins University contracted with The Education Alliance to evaluate the implementation and impact of the "What is Engineering?" course in two sites associated with the MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement) program.
The evaluation examined the extent to which the course is replicated or adapted as part of the Johns Hopkins training/course delivery model. The Education Alliance developed field test protocols and other instruments as part of this evaluation for subsequent use at other sites as part of the scale-up within MESA, and nationally. These protocols included an observation protocol for Johns Hopkins professional development/training; interview protocols for program staff; interview protocols for students; pre/post student satisfaction questionnaire; pre/post student aspirations questionnaire; and a program staff training questionnaire. Evaluation findings are meant to provide useful information to MESA administrators about what participants gain from the course, as well as how the Johns Hopkins model is adapted to a local context.
