The Changing Systems workshops and guidebooks are drawn from eight years of helping schools find ways for diverse students to meet uniform expectations. They are also based on two earlier studies that form the foundation of the research: a shadowing study of student engagement in seven high schools, (Personalized Learning, pp.173-194), and a description of five high schools undertaking reform at different levels of organization, Dynamics of Change in High School Teaching.
