Catherine Carney teaches English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and English to grades 812 at Dedham High School. She has taught ESOL from the elementary to the community college level.
In Dedham, Catherine co-created a self-study course to introduce content-area teachers to second language acquisition and strategies to help English language learners succeed in content classes. She is now taking part in The Teacher Knowledge Project through the School for International Training; this inquiry-based program is designed to help teachers develop into thoughtful, reflective practitioners.
After living in both Oregon and Montana, Catherine returned to the Boston area to teach at her alma mater, Dedham High. Much of her time outside the classroom is spent working with the Massachusetts Association of Teachers to Speakers of Other Languages (www.matsol.org), for which she is the low-incidence representative to the board. Catherine enjoys spending time with friends and family as well as hiking, writing, and encouraging others to write.
