Hire Today, Gone Tomorrow: The Determinants of Attrition among Public School Teachers

This paper analyzes the determinants of teacher attrition using matched teacher-student class-level information for all Florida public school teachers. The results indicate that classroom characteristics, such as students' performance on standardized tests and the average number of disciplinary incidents, play a larger role than school average student characteristics in determining teacher attrition. These findings suggest that in addition to salary, classroom assignment is an important factor when considering policies to promote teacher retention and teacher quality. (2005)

Minority Teacher Recruitment, Development, and Retention

Successful Retention of New and Minority Teachers: Results from the SASS and TFS

This study explores factors involved in the high attrition rate of teachers, especially new teachers and minority teachers in a comparison of those who stayed in the profession and those who left. Due to the increasing diversity of students, it is growing increasingly important to retain quality teachers. It is hoped that understanding attrition will be helpful in the retention of teachers. The use of data from the SASS and the TFS, variables and predictors were identified and analyzed. New teacher and minority teacher analysis results are discussed.
