In the report, Overlooked and Underserved: Immigrant Children in U.S. Secondary Schools, Urban Institute researcher and presenter Jorge Ruiz-de-Velasco and co-author Michael Fix with Beatriz Chu Clewell examine the educational barriers facing these students and offer strategies for educators and policymakers to overcome those barriers.

The WestEd Regional Laboratory sponsored Bridging Cultures project, in which presenters Giancarlo Mercado and Catherine Daley participated, involved collaboration among researchers and teacher-researchers since Fall 1996 in an action research project. Exploration of the cultural frameworks based on the values associated with the dimensions of individualism (the orientation of the dominant U.S. culture) and collectivism (the orientation of most immigrant cultures, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and others) guided teachers explorations in their classrooms.

"Chèche Konnen" means "search for knowledge" in Haitain Creole. Presenters Cindy Ballenger and Josiane Hudicourt-Barnes both participated in this project, which looks at the roles of language in the classroom, students learning of math and science, and teachers professional development.

Presenter Robert Parker has worked extensively with the Development and Dissemination Schools Initiative. The Development and Dissemination Schools Initiative is a five-year project of the New York City Board of Education's Office of Bilingual Education and the Education Alliance at Brown University. Its goal is to help New York's English-language learners (Ells) acquire both English-language and other skills and knowledge they will need to meet the New Standards that the Chancellor has established for all students in New York City.

The The Education Alliance hosted the Fourth Annual Claiborne Pell Educational Policy Seminar and the Institute on Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in April, 2000. These events brought together practitioners, researchers, and policy makers to explore critical issues in the education of English language learners.
